“Wait a minute! This food is not for you! It’s for the normal birds – finches, blue jays, woodpeckers – not for you! Where did you even come from? This is California, not South America!”
I couldn’t believe my eyes the first time these gorgeous parrots showed up. I don’t know where they came from but they are now living in my backyard. I was feeding the “normal” birds for a couple of years but this year, these Nanday parrots came by and said, “Hey guys – free eats! Alert the whole gang!” It’s now become a daily visit (actually several times a day) and it’s getting crowded.
They come 10 or 12 at a time and they crowd onto the feeders for front row seating, shoving each other out of the way. It’s kind of like Black Friday when flat screen TVs go one sale at Walmart. They’re all trying to get there first. And I detect a bit of an attitude. They must know they’re pretty because they pose while they’re eating to show off that they can eat with their “hands” like we do while easily balancing on the other one. I’ve never seen a bird do that before.

Hi Jenny, it’s only November 5th, 2025 but I stumbled across your recipe this afternoon for your “Easy Christmas Pecan Balls” on “JENNY CAN COOK” and made them today within minutes. I left the plastic-wrapped dough in the refrigerator for a couple hours while we made and had dinner, then cut them into cubes and my husband volunteered to roll them into balls and get them into the oven. We got 22 of them and they baked-up to perfection, keeping their “ball” shape perfectly. My MIL used to make these for my husband and all 5 of her children and she’s been gone for 25 years now. When I saw this recipe I instantly knew this would seriously tickle my husband – I was right! I didn’t tell him what I was making I just told him he’s gonna’ really love this! He became curious. When he saw me chopping the hot pecans he got choked-up, feeling “feels” about his great Mom. He knew right away. Thank you for the recipe. Glad it popped-up for us this very boring afternoon here at the Colorado River in Arizona. I decided to look-in on how you’re doing these days and found your jennyjones.com/myblog/unexpected-visitors page and saw these beautiful photos you’ve taken of the green Parrots at your home. Our home is in Glendora, CA and the story is… that there was a fire in a pet store in the Glendora Village on Glendora Ave many years ago… in the 80s I believe it was and the several green Parrots that were in the store for sale, were released quickly to save their lives and that over these 40-something years the whole San Gabriel Valley (and beyond?) have benefited from their release that day and they continue to thrive en masse ever since. We see them regularly on the power lines especially across the back of our backyard. Nice outcome to a very bad day. Maybe the ones in your yard are descendants as well – if you’re anywhere in the region. Jenny, I remember your wonderful show. It and you were first-rate… classy and enjoyable. Take very good care, Jenny. I’m going to go check-out what else you’ve got in the way of recipes very soon.
Sending you the best!
Victoria
Oh no, Jenny, not another issue with these swarm of parrots. You get away from squirrel problem and now this. Guys give Jenny a break and stay away. The smaller birds need to eat too…so shoo!!!
Jenny, my advice…get a cat…lol 😹😊
Take care, Jenny {{{hugs}}}🥰
Wow! How cool is that?
I recently had a Baltimore Oriole show up at my feeder & thought that was pretty cool, but let’s face, he isn’t a parrot. Or a whole bunch of them. He only came the one day. I put out grape jelly for a few days & nada. Since then I’ve read the grape jelly can kill a hummingbird, so that was the end of that.
I took look for sales on the sunflower seeds, peanuts, pecans, almonds etc. My birds have to share with squirrels & chipmunks. I’ve been trying to entice a crow to bring me money but he just eats & leaves. Figures.
Enjoy your parrots!
Hi Jenny, I touch base every so often to watch another old cooking video you’ve done. I just love your sense of humor and sometimes need it to brighten my day. Looking in on your blog I noticed your birthday is coming up. Wow, 79 and looking beautiful. As everyone probably tells you, I miss you doing cooking videos. Or any show would be great. Maybe a podcast on your thoughts about anything, with occasional guests. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you, you have enriched my life.
Stunning photos! I miss your cooking show. Have you ever thought about doing a documentary about your fascinating life? I’m a producer and fellow Canadian living in Los Angeles so if you’re interested I’d love to help.
There are beautiful San Francisco Parrots and I think there is a story about how they ended up freely flying about that area. Unfortunately, I forgot, but now will search it out. Hope to visit again out there soon
Hello Rose… after I saw this post on Jenny’s blog a few minutes ago, I replied to her directly and told her what I know is true about our green Parrots in the San Gabriel Valley and how these birds have figured-into my life as well, and where they come from. I’ve got the story. See above if you’re interested. Today’s date is 11/5/25.
However until I read your post right now from last April, we never knew they are “San Francisco” Parrots. Good to know and add to our knowledge about these beautiful birds.
That’s so nice, Jenny. I leave bread out every morning for the birds near me in the northeast. I wish I had parrots tho.
Here in Wisconsin we aren’t that lucky, but we do have Evening Grosbeaks and in the depths of winter snow they look absolutely stunning. Youre a wonder full person and thank you for sharing.
Jenny! Did you know that the vast majority of parrots, as seen in your photo above, are left handed!! I’ve met a lot of parrots over the years since rescuing the Amazons and the Eclectus that live with me, and I’ve only met ONE right handed parrot! She is actually perched in her cage right now, napping! I thought it was a really cool tidbit of information, when I found out years ago. I wish we had bright coloured birds like that, up here in Alberta, but we only have Blue Jays in the region that are brighter than the rest. There are a couple that frequent my feeders. I would absolutely love to see parrots flying the skies around here. But the most common is the Magpie🤣
Miss your cooking show! Love the recipes, thank you for sharing.
Hi Jenny – I miss you on your cooking show. You were a lot of fun to watch. Best wishes
What beautiful birds! So exotic looking, they look like they just came from the jungle! Przepiekne!!
Wow! That is awesome! I would feel blessed too.
Just watch what you say around them😁 especially since they leave your property 😂😂
These are parrots! Maybe hide a little speaker and teach them all to talk?
